While I’m getting my finances organized, I need a system that is user-friendly, with the simplicity of an Excel spreadsheet but with room to grow as my finances evolve.  I also need a system that can “be everywhere”, on my iPad, my Windows PC, my Android phone or even in a file folder.

At FinCon14 , I had the honor of meeting Jesse Meacham, a former CPA and the mastermind behind YNAB (You Need a Budget) financial management software.  YNAB is a great program for keeping track of my financial goals, seeing net worth at a glance, and giving every dollar a job to do.

The methodology behind YNAB is simple: there are four basic rules to handling your money, and these rules require you to be PROactive with your earnings instead of REactive.  I’ve used various types of budget software in the past, from an Excel spreadsheet to Mint.com,  to even a Quickbooks file (pretty much overcomplicated an already complicated life).  YNAB doesn’t pull transactions from your bank account like Mint does, although you can import transactions that you exported from your bank’s website for quicker data entry.  However, because this is about being PROactive, it’s best that you check your budget amounts and then after making a decision about a purchase, input your transactions as they happen.  This is why “be everywhere” is so important.

Overall, YNAB is the one I’ve stuck with over many years, and that’s saying alot.  I haven’t gotten bored with it, either.  At the forums you will find a community from all walks of life and financial situations that is supportive, eager to help, and generous with sharing the lessons they’ve learned on their financial independence journey.  When you are working towards any goal, whether losing weight, being more productive or becoming debt free, there is always a greater chance you will hit that goal when you have a community of support and accountability behind you.

If you’re curious as to how YNAB can help you with your financial plans, they offer a full-featured 34 day trial.  This allows you to take it through a full month’s cycle and see how the work you put in during the present month carries over to the next month.  It’s really a robust yet simple and fun program to use.

As financial management software goes, there are a lot of choices to choose from.  I know, I’ve tried at least five of them!  However, the best choice is the one that works best for you and your situation.  The great thing about YNAB is that whether you are on a regular salary or are self-employed with an irregular income like me, it works for you.
